- Engine: 3.4 and 3.8 flat-six; 3.0 twin-turbo from 2015; 4.0 in GT3 models
- Power: 350–700 PS
- Weight: about 1,380–1,675 kg

The 991 was only the third all-new platform in the 911's history. The wheelbase grew by 100 mm, the body used a good deal of aluminium, and electromechanical power steering replaced the hydraulic system. A seven-speed manual gearbox was offered alongside PDK. The Targa returned to a roll hoop and a wraparound rear screen, with an elaborate powered roof.

The first-generation Carrera had a 3.4-litre engine with 350 PS and the Carrera S a 3.8 with 400 PS. In 2015 the second generation replaced both with a 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat-six, giving 370 PS and 420 PS. From then on every Carrera was turbocharged.

The GT cars stayed naturally aspirated. The first 991 GT3 had a 475 PS 3.8 that revved to 9,000 rpm and came only with PDK and rear-wheel steering. The 911 R of 2016, limited to 991 cars, brought back the manual gearbox, and the later GT3 offered one with its 500 PS 4.0. The 700 PS GT2 RS was the most powerful 911 of its time.

## On a road trip
The longer wheelbase makes the 991 a more stable and relaxed long-distance car than any 911 before it, and a turbocharged Carrera loses very little at altitude. It is wider than a 997, which you notice on single-track roads. The front axle lift option is close to essential on GT3 models if you plan to use hotel car parks and ferry ramps.

## What to check
- Early 991 GT3s (2014 model year) were recalled after two engine fires traced to a connecting rod fastener, and all 785 cars delivered at that point had their engines replaced.
- First-generation GT3 engines were later given an extended warranty by Porsche for valvetrain wear; check what has been done.
- Vacuum change-over valves, which control exhaust flaps and other functions, fail on many cars and are cheap to replace.
- Front radiators and air conditioning condensers damaged by road debris.
- A full Porsche or specialist history; these cars depend on correct software and coding as much as on mechanical servicing.
