The 992 arrived in 2019 with the wide body, previously reserved for four-wheel-drive and Turbo models, as standard on every car. It has an eight-speed PDK gearbox, a largely aluminium body and a 3.0-litre twin-turbo engine, with 385 PS in the Carrera and 450 PS in the Carrera S at launch. A seven-speed manual was offered on some models.
The GT3 of 2021 kept a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre engine with 510 PS and adopted double-wishbone front suspension from the racing cars. The GT3 RS added active aerodynamics, and the range has also included the Sport Classic, the off-road Dakar and the lightweight manual S/T, built in 1,963 examples to mark the 911's 60th anniversary.
The facelift announced in 2024 introduced the first hybrid 911. The Carrera GTS T-Hybrid uses a new 3.6-litre engine with an electrically assisted turbocharger and a motor in the gearbox, for a combined 541 PS. Porsche has since announced a Turbo S using a twin-turbo version of the same hybrid system, with 711 PS.

On a road trip
The 992 is the most capable long-distance 911 so far: quiet, fast, efficient on the motorway and unaffected by altitude in turbocharged form. Its size is the cost. At about 1.85 m wide before the mirrors it needs care on narrow passes and in old towns, and the wheels are easily kerbed. Front axle lift is a sensible option on any car, and close to essential on a GT3.
What to check
- Check for outstanding recalls and software updates by VIN; several campaigns have covered the 992.
- Evidence of track use on GT models: brake and tyre wear, over-rev data from the engine control unit, and stone damage.
- Wheel and tyre condition. The staggered 20 and 21 inch wheels are expensive to repair and replace.
- Specification. Options make a large difference to value and to how the car drives, so check the build sheet.
